Five Types Of Greenhouse Light Bulbs For Your First Greenhouse Project

If you have a greenhouse or have plans of putting up a greenhouse and want some information on greenhouse light bulbs, my best advice is to keep it simple. Here are some quick, easy and all the information you need to know about lighting up your greenhouse.

Incandescent Bulbs are not really used as a main source of plant growth for a greenhouse. They often burn too hot for plant use. If this is your only option I would suggest placing the light not closer than 2 feet away from your plants. These lights are used mainly for providing general lighting.

Metal Halide, High Intensity Discharge or HID grow bulbs provide the most natural light for any greenhouse. Without talking about the science behind these lights, all you need to know about Metal Halide lights is that they produce a high intensity light at the right color spectrum to grow plants, last much longer than your incandescent lights and mimics the outdoor light all with the same electrical output as incandescent lights.

Fluorescent Bulbs are fast becoming the popular choice for indoor gardeners. These lights can promote plant growth while remaining fairly cool and because they don’t produce an intense heat, gardeners use these lights at close range to help start up seedlings. Nowadays there are fluorescent lights that produce a higher intensity light, which gives you more options to choose from. But multiple choices can be a burden. Combination, conversion, 2000k or 5000k, dual spectrum, etc. There is so much new jargon with greenhouse lighting nowadays that it’s intimidating. That’s why it’s best to keep it simple.

High Pressure Sodium HID bulbs have the longest bulb life. Because these lights don’t produce a light spectrum as good as the previous mentioned lights, these lights are not necessary for the scope of this article.

LED lights are the new kids on the block, and though they’re making televisions better nowadays, it can’t be said for the use of grow lights. Maybe in the near future, advances in technology will turn things around, but as pricey as these lights are, it’s better to wait it out.

So what do I suggest you start off with?

For starters, you should invest in Metal Halide HID bulbs. Because of their wide range of use and durability, Metal halides are the ideal lights from starting up seedlings to growing plants on a larger scale.

Novices still need to take care when handling these lights.

Though different plants require different amounts of light, the output of HID bulbs are intense, and you should not have these on in a greenhouse for the whole day. Contrary to popular beliefs, if you want to promote a healthier plant growth, give them a break from light.
